NYSP’s
PIRP is a proprietary six-hour course using behavior modification methodology
to encourage the development of habits and behaviors associated with advanced
driving skills available online or in
the classroom. Certified instructors
guide the student through five segments of instruction using question and
answer, role-play, and other teaching techniques. The instruction is segmented by various video
presentations. The materials and film
were updated in 2009.
The
program has been designed to help the student become more aware of their
individual responsibility as a driver.
It presents an opportunity to quietly review and assess their driving
habits and behaviors away from the usual
rush of everyday life. Students are
encouraged to speak up in the group and share their personal experiences and
feelings.
A Study Guide has been designed to help the student identify the reasons for their driving behavior and to help them make personal commitments to change and improve, if necessary.
Reduce up
to 4 Points on Your Driving Record
If you incurred violations during
the 18 month period prior to completing the course, up to four violation points
will be reduced on your driving record, possibly helping you to avoid a license
suspension. However, it will not cancel
a mandatory suspension or revocation, e.g. three (3) speeding convictions
within 18 months nor will it cancel any action pending against a motorist’s
driving privileges. You may take the
NYSP course every 18 months for point reduction.
After completing the
Point/Insurance Reduction Program, you are eligible for a 10% discount on your
Collision and Auto Liability Insurance for three full years. Your liability premium includes Property
Damage (PD), Bodily Injury (BI), and Personal Injury Protection (PIP). Your discount will apply to all vehicles for
which you are the principal operator.
